Agrarökonomik zur Jahrhundertwende – Bewährtes und Unorthodoxes AgEcon
Brandes, Wilhelm.
In this farewell lecture some concepts important for (agricultural) economics are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the Invisible Hand of Adam Smith, sunk costs, information economics, path dependency, error tolerance and redundancy. It is proposed that agricultural economists follow closely new developments in economics proper.

An Emergent Economics of Ecosystem Management AgEcon
Hearnshaw, Edward J.S.; Cullen, Ross; Hughey, Kenneth F.D..
Economics is an evolving and emerging field of study, so is the management of ecosystems. As such, this paper delineates the co-evolution of economic evaluation that reflects the various recognized ecosystem management approaches of anticipative, adaptive and capacitive ecosystem management. Each management approach is critiqued and from this theoretical analysis an emergent approach for the management of ecosystem is put forward, which accordingly suggests an alternative methodological approach for economic evaluations.

Inappropriate surgical chemoprophylaxis and surgical site infection rate at a tertiary care teaching hospital BJID
Rana,Devang Ashwinkumar; Malhotra,Supriya Deepak; Patel,Varsha Jitendra.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze the pattern of surgical chemoprophylaxis, surgical site infection rate, and to check rationality of surgical chemoprophylaxis based on Kunin's criteria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, observational study was performed on patients undergoing surgery, in a tertiary care teaching hospital. Data were collected in a pro-forma which included the patients' details, prescriptions from date of admission to discharge or any other outcome and operative notes. Surgical site infection as defined by Centre for Disease Control criteria was recorded. Rationality was assessed based on Kunin's criteria. RESULTS: Total 220 patients were enrolled over a period of one year. Mean hospital stay was 8.67 ± 5.17 days. A total of 2294...

O PROCESSO DE TOMADA DE DECISÃO SOB O VIÉS DA ECOSSOCIOECONOMIA DAS ORGANIZAÇÕES: O CASO DE UMA COOPERATIVA CATARINENSE DE ARTESÃOS AgEcon
Felski, Henrique; Sampaio, Carlos Alberto Cioce; Dallabrida, Ivan Sidney.
The objective of this work is to analyze the Arte Rio Cooperative’s decision making process to assess how far it comprehends its members’ cooperative production system, i.e. if there is a logic governing the process that is different from utilitarian economics. It was inferred that the logic involved in the decision making process is contrary to market economy rationality. The cooperative’s decision making process has found mechanisms to adapt to the dictates of the market economy, mechanisms which modify popular culture and knowledge and the cooperative lifestyle of its members. This is a qualitative study supported by bibliographic and document analysis, descriptive exploratory research, participative observation and structured script interviews. In the...

Rationality of U.S. Department of Agriculture Livestock Price Forecasts: A Unified Approach AgEcon
Sanders, Dwight R.; Manfredo, Mark R..
This research presents a systematic and unified approach to evaluating forecast rationality that considers the potential of nonstationarity in forecasts and realized values. The approach is applied to one-quarter ahead U.S. Department of Agriculture livestock price forecasts from 1982 through 2004. Results show that forecasts and realized prices are integrated of the same order, and those that are nonstationary are cointegrated. However, the stationary price forecasts for hogs, turkeys, eggs, and milk are biased and improperly scaled, and forecast errors tend to be repeated. Similarly, nonstationary forecasts for cattle and broilers are also biased and irrational in the long run, but short-run dynamics are rational.

The regional specifity of structural change in agriculture: An assessment of the role of farmers’ strategic behaviour on the land market AgEcon
Margarian, Anne.
Among the family-farms in western Germany, significant regional differences are observable. They exist not only with respect to present farm-structure but also with respect to patterns of structural change. In the present paper, the different farm-development-strategies that cause these regional patterns are explained economically. As a central cause for their stability in a competitive environment, the relatedness of agricultural production to the non-renewable factor land is identified. Moreover, the coordination of the different strategies, which results in regional clusters, is shown to evolve endogenously in a model of strategic interaction on the land-market. It is demonstrated that due to the existence of rents of the status quo and resulting...

To What Surprises Do Hog Futures Markets Respond? AgEcon
Frank, Julieta; Garcia, Philip; Irwin, Scott H..
We reassess the effect of new information in the Hogs and Pigs Reports (HPR) focusing on announcements’ rationality and alternative surprises. HPR announcements are irrational estimates of final estimates, and market expectations are irrational estimates of HPR numbers. Using the market’s best forecast and incorporating final estimates, we modify conventional information measures. Despite differences as large as 33 cents/cwt in price response, findings suggest there is little to differentiate among surprise measures. Regardless, the message that HPR provides new information to the market is strongly supported. On balance, marketing (breeding) information has a larger effect on short-term (long-term) price changes.

To What Surprises Do Hog Futures Markets Respond? AgEcon
Frank, Julieta; Garcia, Philip; Irwin, Scott H..
We re-assess the effect of new information contained in the Hogs and Pigs Reports (HPR) focusing on the rationality of the announcements. We find that HPR preliminary numbers are irrational estimates of the final numbers and market expectations before the announcements are also irrational estimates of HPR numbers. Based on these results we modify the conventional measure of new information entering into the market (i.e., announcement - market expectation), and incorporate final estimates and the market’s best forecast into the analysis. Results show modest statistical differences between the conventional and modified measures of surprise; however some economic differences, as large as 27 cents/cwt, emerged. We also find that, as expected, marketings...
